Can built-in benches replace deck railing?

Sometimes. Decks more than 30 inches above grade require a code-height railing in Ohio; built-in benches do not meet that code on their own. On low decks under 30 inches, bench walls can run along the perimeter as the edge treatment; no separate railing is required. We measure the grade-to-deck height at the home consultation.

Do the planter boxes have drainage?

Yes. Every built-in planter gets a pond liner with drainage holes at the base, run through the deck framing to grade or to a drain mat. Standing water never sits; soil drains as it would in a garden bed.

Can benches and planters be added to an existing deck?

In limited cases. Built-in benches and planters tie into the joist framing, which usually means opening sections of the deck surface. If the deck is more than a few years old or built on substandard framing, we recommend a new build with the bench-and-planter integration designed in.

Can I plant directly in the built-in planter or set pots inside?
