A New 16’x16′ Composite Deck With a Privacy Screen
Homeowners in Maineville wanted a new deck off the back of their two-story brick home, finished with materials that hold up without yearly upkeep. The plan:
- 16’x16′ deck on premium pressure-treated framing
- Dark Deckorators Voyage composite on top
- Black aluminum railing around the perimeter
- A privacy screen on the rear corner to block sightlines from the neighboring property
The result is an elevated deck with clean horizontal lines, a 4′ wide staircase that turns on a landing before reaching the lawn, and a tall slatted screen that blocks sightlines without walling off the seating area.
Permits and Blueprints
We pulled all required blueprints and permits, and the finished deck was inspected and signed off as code-compliant. The work area was cleared of all construction debris and material before we left the property.
Frame and Staircase
The frame and staircase were built from premium pressure-treated lumber. Joist tape, a self-adhesive flashing membrane, was applied across every joist and stair stringer to seal the wood against moisture, the number one enemy of any deck frame.
Deckorators Voyage Composite Decking
New flooring is Deckorators Voyage, a mineral-based composite with a polymer cap that resists fading, staining, scratching, and mold. No sanding, staining, or sealing required.
Build details:
- Picture frame border running the outer perimeter, perpendicular to the field boards, capping cut ends for a polished edge
- Hidden fastener system that clips boards from the side, so no screw heads show on the walking surface
- Matching Voyage fascia wrapping the outer frame so the underside trim line stays low-maintenance
Deckorators Privacy Screen
A horizontal-slat privacy screen runs along the rear corner of the deck. Slats are spaced for airflow and filtered light while blocking direct sightlines from the side yard and neighboring home. The black frame ties into the railing system for a continuous look.
Preferred Georgian Aluminum Railing
Railing is Preferred Georgian in black aluminum, with straight square balusters and a clean rectangular cap. It runs the deck perimeter and continues down the staircase. Aluminum does not rust or need repainting and holds its finish through Ohio’s freeze-thaw cycles. The black reads sharply against the dark gray floor and the tan brick.
Why Maineville Homeowners Choose Deckorators Voyage
Voyage is one of the higher-tier composite products on the market, built around a mineral-based core rather than the wood-fiber core common in entry-level composites. That core absorbs almost no water, so boards are:
- More stable across temperature and humidity swings
- Lighter than older composites
- Backed by one of the longest warranties in the category
Paired with pressure-treated framing protected by joist tape, hidden fasteners, aluminum railing, and a slatted privacy screen, the build is designed to hold its finish for decades with no annual maintenance.
